Mediation Arbitration (Med-Arb)
Sometimes, families or individuals need a clear path forward when resolving disputes—especially when time, cost, and certainty matter. Mediation-Arbitration, or Med-Arb, combines the benefits of both mediation and arbitration in a single, streamlined process.
Understanding Mediation-Arbitration
Med-Arb begins with mediation – an open, guided conversation where both parties work with a neutral professional to try to reach an agreement together. If some or all of the issues can’t be resolved, the process moves into arbitration. At this stage, the same professional (the Med-Arb practitioner) makes a binding decision based on the facts and law – just like a judge would, but in a more private and flexible setting.

Why Choose Med-Arb?
- Saves Time and Costs: You won’t need to start over with a new professional if mediation doesn’t resolve everything.
- Certainty and Closure: You get a binding decision if needed, so you’re not left in limbo.
- Flexible and Confidential: We adapt the process to your situation. Everything happens in a private, respectful environment.
- One Professional, Consistent Support: The same person guides you through both mediation and arbitration, which means less repetition, more consistency, and better understanding of your needs.
When is Med-Arb a Good Fit?
Med-Arb works well in family law situations where there’s a real effort to resolve matters collaboratively—but both sides want the assurance that a decision will be made if agreement isn’t possible. It can be used for:
- Parenting decisions
- Property division
- Support arrangements
- Other family-related disputes

What to Expect
You’ll begin with a screening process to make sure Med-Arb is appropriate and safe for everyone involved. Should we move ahead, both parties will sign a document that outlines the steps and expectations of the process. We support you every step of the way – whether you reach a full agreement through mediation or need a final decision through arbitration.
